The Challenge

Skudin Surf is a family-run surf instruction business operating across New York and New Jersey, offering kids camps, adult programs, private lessons, team programs, and ancillary services like board storage. With operations spanning public beaches and wave pools, their business depends on precise logistics, fast communication, and a booking experience that works under real-world conditions. Weather changes. Last-minute cancellations. Parents booking for multiple children. Peak days where volume spikes dramatically. At the time, Skudin Surf was relying on a patchwork of third-party tools and flat forms to manage registrations, waivers, payments, and communications. None of the platforms fully met their needs. Together, they created fragmentation, duplicated effort, and unnecessary cost. This was the single biggest source of frustration for the team. They were paying multiple vendors significant sums to approximate what should have been one cohesive system. Skudin Surf needed a unified, mobile-friendly registration platform that could handle the full lifecycle of camps and lessons, integrate directly into their existing website. Security and compliance were also critical, including encrypted transactions, protected waiver data, role-based access, U.S. data residency, and compliance with New York State requirements for storing and managing information related to minors.

Our Solution

Intoria began with a comprehensive product discovery and roadmap phase. Over two months, we worked closely with the Skudin Surf team to map operational realities, customer journeys, edge cases, and seasonal pressures. The result was a detailed, sixty-page software discovery and strategy document that clarified requirements, defined priorities, and aligned expectations before any development began. From there, we designed and built a custom surf registration platform focused on clarity, speed, and ease of use. The system supports lesson and camp registration, waiver signing, promo codes, gift cards, unified customer profiles, and streamlined re-booking for returning families. Parents can manage multiple children from a single interface, while staff retain full administrative control over program availability, cancellations, and reporting. The platform includes weather-aware cancellation workflows, secure payment processing with end-to-end encryption, multi-factor authentication, and role-based access control. Waiver data and customer information are stored in compliance with U.S. data protection standards, U.S. data residency requirements, and New York State laws governing information about minors. Built as an MVP with a firm launch deadline, the system was delivered customer-ready ahead of peak demand, replacing multiple third-party tools with one cohesive, purpose-built solution.

Results

Skudin Surf launched a unified registration platform that immediately simplified both customer experience and internal operations. Parents can now register, re-book, and manage their families’ surf programs quickly and confidently, even during high-volume periods. Staff gained centralized control, clearer reporting, and faster communication tools for managing weather changes and schedule adjustments. By consolidating multiple paid platforms into a single custom system, Skudin Surf reduced operational friction and ongoing software costs while gaining functionality that off-the-shelf tools could not provide. The platform now reflects how their business actually runs, rather than forcing them to adapt to generic software constraints. Just as importantly, the upfront discovery process gave Skudin Surf confidence in the direction of the project before committing to full development. The result is a scalable foundation that supports growth, seasonality, and evolving program offerings, while preserving the personal, family-run feel that defines their brand.
